Gizmo AI

Education

Gizmo is a study app that turns your notes, slides or textbook pages into flashcards and quizzes, then drills you on them in a game-like format that students genuinely seem to get hooked on. It is aimed squarely at exam season, and the reviews are full of GCSE, A-level and AP students crediting it with grade jumps. The pricing model is unusual and worth understanding before you pay. The free plan is not a teaser: you can create unlimited cards and decks and quiz yourself as much as you like. What the free plan limits is impatience. Lose fifteen hearts while quizzing and you wait ten minutes before continuing, and Magic Import, the feature that builds a deck from a file, is capped at two a day with a twenty-minute gap between them. Unlimited removes exactly those frictions: unlimited hearts, unlimited imports with no wait, unlimited AI tutor and hints. Two Unlimited plans are sold, and they suit very different people. The yearly plan is a single payment for 365 days and is the cheaper route if you study all year. The weekly plan exists for cramming and is the honest choice if you only need it for one exam block. A student discount is also available, and it shows up as a toggle during sign-up when your account is eligible, so check for it before you confirm payment.

MagicSchool AI

Education

MagicSchool AI is a classroom AI platform built for K-12 teachers and their students, with more than 80 teacher tools for lesson plans, worksheets, quizzes, IEP drafts, rubrics, family emails and presentations, plus a set of student-facing tools and a chatbot called Raina. Because it was designed for schools rather than offices, it ships with FERPA and COPPA compliance, content moderation and teacher oversight built in, which is usually the blocker when a district reviews a general AI assistant. The money side is simple, and that matters when you are looking for a discount. There is a genuinely free forever tier for individual teachers that covers the core teacher and student tools, so you can run a full term of planning without paying anything. The paid tier, MagicSchool Plus, unlocks unlimited generations, unlimited output history, editable AI outputs in Studio Mode, the wider student toolset and learning insights. Paying yearly instead of monthly is the biggest lever available to an individual teacher: the annual rate works out at roughly a third less per month than the rolling monthly price. Schools and districts sit on the Enterprise tier, which is quoted rather than listed and includes volume-based discounts, SSO, LMS and SIS integrations and a data privacy agreement. If several teachers on your team already pay separately, asking for a school quote is almost always cheaper than stacking individual subscriptions.

Skillshare

Education

Skillshare is a subscription library of project-based classes, weighted heavily towards creative skills: illustration, graphic design, photography, animation, video editing, music production, writing and freelancing business. Classes are short, practical and built around producing something, which suits skill-building more than accredited qualification — there are no formal certificates here. Because access is all-or-nothing on a single subscription, the saving is about timing rather than tiers. Annual billing is substantially cheaper than monthly — often close to half the effective rate — so if you intend to use it for more than a couple of months, the annual plan is the sensible purchase and most of the offers on this page are annual or free-trial promotions. Before paying, use a trial deliberately: pick one class you would genuinely finish and complete it, rather than sampling ten lessons, because the honest question is whether you finish courses at all. If you do not, no discount makes this worthwhile. When you do subscribe, plan a batch: list five classes, block time weekly, and download class materials and project files while your access is live, since the classes themselves are not available offline forever. Annual plans renew automatically, so diarise the renewal date. Check whether your employer, library or student status gives access to a comparable library first — many do, and that beats every coupon.

Astra AI

Education

Astra AI is a study and exam-prep tutor for phones, made by Astra AI d.o.o., and it has become one of the more visible homework apps on both app stores, with well over a hundred thousand ratings on Google Play and a rating around 4.7 to 4.8. You photograph a question and it returns step-by-step working rather than just an answer. Solver Mode handles homework on the spot, Socratic Mode pushes you to reason through a topic instead of copying it, and Exam Prep takes a photo of your paper or a list of topics and builds a revision plan around it. Lessons are mapped to national curricula across fourteen subjects, from algebra, geometry and linear equations to chemical reactions, the periodic table, forces and kinematics, plus English and German, and the app is localised into dozens of languages. The money side is simple and worth knowing before you search for a code. Astra AI is a free download with in-app purchases, so you can install it, try the solver and see whether the explanations suit your level before paying anything. Subscriptions are handled entirely by Apple and Google, which means there is no checkout on a website to paste a coupon into. Discounts, when they exist, arrive as in-app offers and seasonal back-to-school promotions, and any subscription is cancelled and refunded through your App Store or Play Store account.

Chalkie AI

Education

Chalkie AI is a lesson planning tool for teachers: enter a topic, year group and curriculum framework and it generates a full slideshow with learning objectives, key vocabulary and differentiated activities in under a minute, then exports to Google Slides, PowerPoint or PDF. It covers curriculum standards across more than twenty countries, so the output lands closer to what you actually have to teach than a generic template you would end up rewriting anyway, and any slide can be edited by describing the change in plain English rather than fiddling with formatting. Worksheets, activity sheets and multi-lesson unit series work the same way. Pricing is unusually honest for this category. The free plan needs no card and allows a handful of full resources every week plus a small allowance of AI edits, which is enough to plan one subject rather than a full timetable. Paid plans lift the caps sharply, remove the Chalkie badge from your materials, allow longer lesson series and larger slide decks, and add YouTube embedding and curriculum alignment. The saving that matters: yearly billing on either paid tier is effectively three months free versus paying monthly, and since a school year runs longer than nine months, the annual plan is the cheaper choice for almost every teacher who uses it past the trial stage.

Gauth

Education

Gauth is an AI study companion built around photographing a problem and getting a worked solution back: snap or type a maths, physics, chemistry, biology or writing question and it returns step-by-step reasoning rather than just a final answer, with follow-up questions handled in chat. It launched as Gauthmath, was rebranded to Gauth, and now adds a voice-based live tutor with a virtual whiteboard, a study converter that turns notes, photos or lecture audio into quizzes and flashcards, and round-the-clock access to human subject experts for the questions the model gets wrong. There is a genuinely usable free tier, and most of the complaints about Gauth are not about the maths but about billing: it leans on short free trials that convert to a paid subscription automatically, so the single most valuable habit is to note the trial end date the day you start and cancel from your app-store subscription screen if you do not intend to keep it. Students get the biggest legitimate saving here. Gauth runs a verified student rate worth roughly half the annual price, and because it is applied to the annual plan it compounds with the usual yearly discount. Verify first, pay second, and set a calendar reminder before renewal.
